Glow Stick Girl Costume Tutorial

Ok, so this is out of season, but I wanted to show how I did this last year. It was super easy. Here's the list of what you'll need:
  • Glow stick bracelets and/or necklaces (I made my costume with only bracelets.) I find these in the $1 bins at Target and Michael's. I had about 4-5 packs (15 count each) to ensure I had enough of each color.
  • Zip ties
  • Safety pins
  • Headband
  • Pair of pants
  • Old black sweater or black t-shirt
Here's the costume showing how it fit on my body.
I used green glow sticks for the face, arms, and legs, yellow for the hair curls, and purple for the dress. How many you use depends on your size.  I was able to assemble most of the costume before having to activate the glow sticks. That way, I was able to pre-assemble my costume before getting the little guy into his costume.

Head: Use zip ties to anchor the head at the top of the headband. You'll use zip ties to attach the yellow curls to the head. Make sure the zip ties are snug for the curls. I had to occasionally double check that my curls weren't drooping forward or backward.

Arms: Attach 6 green bracelets together for one long strand to create the arms. Use zip ties to attach this long strand to the arms of an old black sweater or shirt.

Dress: Use 9 purple bracelets (3 on each side) to create the dress. Use a zip tie at each corner to tie two strands together. Then use another zip tie to attach the first zip tie to the black sweater/shirt.

Legs: Use 4 green bracelets (2 for each leg). I used safety pins to connect the legs to the jeans since I didn't have any jeans to sacrifice. Place the bracelets between the two arms of the safety pin so that it's pinched in place when you close the safety pin. (DON'T puncture the bracelet with the safety pin...that will likely make a mess!)

This outfit was a hit! From far away, kids couldn't tell that it was attached to a person, so they were a little perplexed while walking up our driveway. I would even break out some dance moves to get a few chuckles. Enjoy!
